1. Wash your hands thoroughly and wear clean examination gloves.
2. Remove one tongue depressor from the box.
3. Inspect it before use; do not use it if cracked, rough, or damaged.
4. Ask the person to open their mouth and extend their tongue.
5. Place the rounded end on the front or middle portion of the tongue.
6. Apply gentle downward pressure to assist with examining the mouth and throat.
7. Dispose of the tongue depressor after use according to the approved disposal procedures.
